Selective Service

If you are between the ages of 18-25... Read This!

What is The Selective Service System?
The Selective Service is a system that is used by the Federal Government to insure that the United States has enough men in the military in a time of crisis or in the event of a mobilization.

Who should register for the Selective Service?
Young men 18 through 25 years of age are required to register, including refugees. Women do not register for Selective Service. If you arrived to the United States when you were 26 years old or older, you do not register.

What if I don't register?
If you are required to but do not register, you can be fined up to $25,000 or be sentenced to five years in prison. This rarely happens, but other sanctions are applied. For example, a man could be barred from a federally funded job, or be denied loans for higher education or job training. Immigrants, including refugees, can be denied the ability to become Naturalized United States Citizens.

How do I register for Selective Service?
It is very easy to register. A short Registration Card (SSS FORM 1M) must be completed and mailed to the Select Service System address printed on the front of the card. Within 90 days after registering, the applicant should receive a registration acknowledgement, which provides the applicant with a copy of his registration record. Your IRC caseworker can provide you with this card.

You can also register on-line (click here).

What if I move?
If you're a young man, age 18 through 25, the law requires you to notify the Selective Service System of an address change within 10 days. This can be accomplished by completing SSS FORM 2. You can also change your address online (click here).

How do I contact Selective Service?
If you do not receive a registration acknowledgement within 90 days after registering, it is very important that you write to the address below, or call 703-605-4000 to verify that your registration has been received. The address is:

Selective Service System
Registration Information Office
P.O. Box 94638
Palatine, IL 60094-4638

If you are a man between the age of 18 through 25, and you have not registered you should do so immediately. Contact your IRC caseworker and they will provide you with the Registration Card and assist you with the filing process. Registration is easy and it is the law.
