San Diego Public Transportation

Bus

San Diego has an extensive transit system and you can get to most any place by bus. Planning ahead will ensure a comfortable and time efficient trip. If there are any questions about public transportation call (619) 238-0100 or visit their website.

Bus maps and schedules are available at IRC, libraries, on the bus, and Transit Store downtown.

There are several options for paying for your bus ride. You can pay cash (exact change needed), use a token, or use a monthly pass. The bus fare for paying cash and tokens are as follows:

  • Local routes are normally $1.75. There are some exceptions and prices can range from $1.50 -$4.00.
  • North County buses are normally $1.75.
  • Senior/Disabled prices are $1.00.

Monthly passes:

  • Adult Ready Pass (also good for trolley) ranges from $58.00 - $84.00, depending on the zone
  • Youth Ready Pass (6-18 years old) $29.00, also good for trolley
  • Senior/Disabled Ready Pass $14.50, also good for trolley

Senior or Disabled:

To be eligible for senior discounts, you must be 60 years of age or older. You can ride for a reduced fair as a senior by showing a Transit Photo ID, a Medicare Card, a State of California Senior ID, or a valid driver’s license. A Transit Photo ID is available at the Transit Store for $6.00.

Disabled persons must have a severe physical or mental disorder. The disability must be a permanent one. It must be visible or you must present a statement from a physician or rehabilitation center. To qualify as disabled, use a Transit Photo ID, a Medicare card, or a State of California DMV Placard ID. Fares for senior or disabled riders are as follows:

  • Cash fare $ 1.00
  • Monthly Pass $14.50

Youth:

  • Monthly Pass $29.00

The Transit Store

Address: 102 Broadway (Broadway and 1st - downtown)

Store Hours: Mon - Fri, 8:30am to 5:00 pm & Sat - Sun, 10:00am to 4:00pm. The phone number is (619) 234-1060.

You may buy Ready passes, bus tickets, and senior/disabled ID cards at the transit store. There are also maps and schedules for all routes.

Regional Transit Telephone Information  (619) 233-3004
Call this number to have a bus map/schedule mailed to you or for bus route information.

InfoExpress  (619) 685-4900
You can call this number if you have a touch-tone phone and you want bus arrival and departure times from stops along the route. You need to know the route number and your stop.

Transfers

If you need to ride more than one bus to get to your destination, ask the bus driver for a transfer at the time you pay your fare on the first bus. When you board your second bus, hand your transfer to the driver. If you will need the transfer for a third bus, explain this to the driver and he or she will return it to you. You can use a transfer to take a bus going in the same direction. You can also use it to travel back in the direction you came from, as long as you do not use the transfer on the same route. You must use a transfer on a different route and within 60 minutes. If you use a Ready Pass (monthly pass), you do not need a transfer.

Getting on the bus

Every San Diego Transit bus stop has a blue sign which indicates the route number served at that stop and other information such as whether the bus is wheelchair accessible or has a bike rack. As the bus arrives to your stop, stand up, face the bus, and signal to the driver to stop. Check the number of the bus and make sure you get on the right bus.

Getting off the bus

If you are not sure where you want to get off the bus, just ask the driver to call out your stop. If you know your stop, pull the cord above the window as your stop nears. This is a signal for the driver to stop for you. Exit the bus through the rear doors.

San Diego Trolley

San Diego’s Trolley (the red train) is a fast and efficient way to get around San Diego. However, it serves only a few communities. There are two lines:

  • The East Line goes from Santee to Downtown
  • The North/South Line goes from Mission Valley to Tijuana

The two lines intersect in Downtown. Trolley fares are based on distance - it depends on how many trolley stops you ride. The fares are:

  • Within Downtown San Diego: $1.25
  • 1 station: $1.50
  • 2 stations: $1.75
  • 3 stations: $2.00
  • 4 - 10 stations: $2.25
  • 11 - 19 stations: $2.50
  • 20+ stations: $3.00 Senior/Disabled is $1.00 any distance.

To ride the trolley, you must purchase a ticket before you board the train. Each station has a vending machine available to purchase tickets. Some stations have a cashier. You can also buy a monthly pass for the trolley at the Transit Store for $58.00 - $84.00, depending on the zone, or you can use the Ready Bus Pass. Youth passes are $26.00 and Senior/Disabled passes are $13.50.

The Coaster

The Coaster train links coastal North County and downtown San Diego. The train serves the communities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Sorrento Valley, Old Town, and Downtown. The Coaster operates Monday through Saturday. Fares are based on zones - there are four zones. You purchase a ticket at the train stop.

  • Prices vary for one trip from $3.75 to $5.25 depending on how many zones you pass.

Monthly passes are also available but the price also depends on how many zones you pass.

  • Monthly passes vary in price from $105.00 to $144.00.
  • Youth passes are available for $72 a month and Senior/Disabled passes are available for $36 a month.

For information about the Coaster, you may call the Regional Transit Information number: (619) 233-3004 or 1-800-COASTER.
