Driver Licenses for Adults

If you want to drive a car, you must have a California
driver license
from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). To get the license you
need to:

Be eighteen (18) years of age

Visit a DMV office (make an appointment for faster service)

Complete application form DL 44
-
Give a thumb print
-
Have your picture taken
-
Provide your social security number.

Provide proof of your birth date and legal presence
-
Provide your true full name
-
Pay the $25 application fee
-
Pass a vision exam
-
Pass a traffic laws and sign test. There are 36 questions on the test.
You have three chances to pass.
If you pass the tests, you will get a “Provisional Permit.”
You then must pass a “behind the wheel” driving test
and will be given a temporary license until the license arrives in the
mail. The license is good for a period of four (4) years, after which
the driver license will need to be renewed.
