IRC San Diego Gift Basket Program

If you would like to welcome a new refugee family, please consider preparing a gift basket for a family of 5. The "basket" may be a bucket, trash can, or laundry basket.  The baskets will be given directly to a refugee family.  This is an ideal project for individuals or community groups:

Hygiene Gift Basket Cleaning Gift Basket
  • 2 bottles of Shampoo
  • 8 bars of soap
  • 2 bottles of hand soap
  • 2 tubes of toothpaste
  • 5 toothbrushes
  • 2 deodorants (1 male, 1 female)
  • 2 boxes of maxi pads
  • Sponges
  • Dish towels
  • 2 bottles of dish soap
  • 1 box/bottle of laundry detergent
  • Bathroom/Kitchen cleaner (ex. 409)
  • 1 box of kitchen trash bags
  • 1 bottle of bleach
  • 8 rolls of toilet paper

Family to Family: Giving refugee families a Hand-Up by sharing Hand-Me-Downs

Refugee families arrive in San Diego with few resources. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps them to rebuild their lives and become productive members of our community.  With the high cost of living in San Diego, newly arrived refugee families face budgeting challenges. Your child’s gently used clothing, shoes, and toys can make a difference for these families in need. The items will not be sold in a thrift shop; you will give them directly to a refugee family.

How it works:

1.    Fill out this form and tell us the age/gender of your children under 12

2.    We’ll match you with a refugee family who has children of the same age/gender (probably just a bit younger)

3.    We’ll introduce you to the family

4.    When your children outgrow their clothes, shoes, toys, and books, you hand-them-down to the refugee family
