How to Help Displaced Iraqi Relatives and Friends

The US is currently processing Iraqi refugees for admission in the US Refugee Program.  Most refugees are being processed in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Egypt. Processing may begin in Syria and other posts in the Middle East (including inside Iraq) at a future date.  It is very important that your family members register with the UNHCR in their country of asylum.

NOTE: Filing an application/affidavit does not guarantee that your relative or friend will get a resettlement interview.  The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will refer people to be considered for a resettlement interview for the US Refugee Program.

I. Spouses, Unmarried Children and Parents (P-3 Processing through Affidavits of Relationships):

If you are a refugee or asylee, you can file an Affidavit of Relationship for:

  • Your unmarried sons and unmarried daughters under the age of 21

  • Your spouse

  • Your parents

Your relatives should register with the UNHCR office in their country of asylum.

II. All Other Relatives or Friends (Placement Applications):

If you have any permanent legal status in the US, regardless of your manner of entry, you can file a Placement Application for those listed below.  If your family members or friends are approved for the US Refugee Program, the Placement Application will help you reunite with them.
