When to call 911

911 is an important phone number for you and your family to learn. You can call 911 on any telephone to get emergency help.

Call 911 to:

  • Report a fire
  • Call an ambulance for emergency medical help
  • Report suspicious activities such as screams, gunshots or calls for help

When you call 911 you may be put on hold. Do NOT hang up. Wait for the operator to speak. If you do not speak English, tell the operator what language you speak and an interpreter should come on the line.

It is important to remember that 911 is only for emergencies! If you call 911 for the wrong reason, you may keep someone else from getting the help they need. Do NOT call 911 to ask directions, find out if someone is in jail, report non-emergency situations or talk about anything that is not an emergency.

For non-emergency calls, use the following numbers (or look in your phonebook):

San Diego Fire: 619-533-4300
El Cajon Police: 619-579-3311
El Cajon Fire: 619-441-1600
La Mesa Police: 619-667-1400
