ESL and Literacy Classes

ESL
Learning English is a vital part of successful readjustment. Although learning a new language can be difficult, free English classes are available at several sites within the community. All centers have morning, evening and night classes to fit your schedule. You may enroll at any time during the school year. To enroll, simply go to one of the centers listed below. A teacher will assess your English level and then place you in an appropriate class. Special English classes are available for Seniors and people with special needs (such as the visually impaired). Literacy classes and Vocational ESL classes are also available.

Citizenship Preparation
IRC offers free citizenship classes at it's mid-city office on Wednesdays.  Classes are small and personalized. For more information or to enroll, call 619-641-7510 ext. 250 or stop by the IRC office:

Literacy Program
The library's READ/San Diego program is a free literacy, English as a Second Language and family literacy instruction service for adults 18 years and older. Staffed by literacy professionals, READ/San Diego coordinates the efforts of volunteer reading tutors and cooperates with local adult schools, community colleges and other literacy education providers in making and receiving student referrals. Each year, the program assists more than 1,000 adult students from various backgrounds and learning levels. To find out more contact READ/San Diego at:

Continuing Education
These same centers also provide many other courses in adult education. Most classes are free and have an open enrollment. There are more than a thousand classes to choose from and 386 community locations. Classes include: Adult basic education, Art, Business, Career, Citizenship, Computers, Cooking, Foreign languages, General Interest, Music, Parenting, and Physical Education.
