Lesson Seven: The Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch makes the federal law for the United States. They also have the power to declare war.

The Legislative Branch is made up of the Senate and The House of Representatives. Together they are called Congress.

The Senate has 100 members. There are two Senators from each state. They serve a six-year term. There is no limit on how many terms they can serve. The leader of the Senate is the Vice-President.

The House of Representatives has 435 voting members. The number of representatives that come from each state depends on its population. The more people a state has, the more House of Representative members they will have. They serve a two-year term. There is no limit on how many terms they can serve. The leader of the House of Representatives is the Speaker of the House.
