  Lesson Six: The Executive Branch

The Executive Branch of the United States government enforces federal law. It also puts new laws into effect.

The President, Vice-President, cabinet and the departments make up the executive branch. The cabinet is a special group that advises the President. The cabinet consists of all the head leaders of each department.

The President is the leader of the Executive Branch. The President is also the commander-in-chief of the military. He or she cannot serve more than two four-year terms. The president is elected in November. The President is elected by the Electoral College. The President is inaugurated in January.

The President’s official home is the White House in Washington D.C.

The Constitution names three requirements of the President. The president must be born a United States Citizen, be at least 35 years old and have lived in the United States at least 14 years.

If the President should die or leave office, the Vice-President automatically becomes president. If both the President and the Vice President die or leave office, the Speaker of the House becomes President.
