Lesson One: The Pilgrims



In 1620, a religious group of people known as the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They left England because they wanted religious freedom. Their ship was called the Mayflower.

Half of the Pilgrims died the first winter in America. They did not have enough food and it was very cold. Native Americans helped the Pilgrims learn how to farm, fish and hunt.

The second winter was much better for the Pilgrims and that fall the Pilgrims and Native Americans had a big feast together. It was the first American holiday. We still celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. Americans eat turkey, pumpkin, corn, cranberries and sweet potatoes just like the Pilgrims did.
