Social Security Income

Supplemental Security Income is a welfare program administered by the Federal Government for people who are blind, physically or mentally disabled, or over the age of 65 and financially needy. Refugees are eligible to these programs if they qualify. These programs should not be confused with retirement programs administered by the Social Security Administration, that are based on contributions made by the recipient during his/her working years.

The application process for these programs can be lengthy so if you believe you or someone in your family qualifies you should begin the application process as soon as possible. Proof of age or the disability must be provided along with proof of the financial need. Recipients receiving SSI will be ineligible for cash assistance and food stamps from the welfare department, but will be eligible for Medical benefits.

Those elderly clients who arrived after 8-22-96 or who turned 65 after that date will be eligible for SSI/Old Age benefits for only the first 7 years after arrival to the United States. After that time they will have to be U.S. Citizens in order to qualify or continue benefits. Further, because these benefits are based on need persons leaving the U.S. for more than 30 days must inform the Social Security Office as the benefits can not be provided to a recipient who is not physically present in the U.S.

If you want to begin the application process or receive additional information regarding these programs contact your IRC Case Manager or the Social Security Office at 1-800-772-1213.
